“The Leadership Certificate Program is envisioned to be a selective program delivering an intensive and transformational experience. Students are admitted in cohorts of 20 per year. Each student will develop a personal leadership learning plan to be implemented throughout their Miami experience under the mentorship of a seasoned executive.”
Leadership Certificate Program
Traditionally, many leadership programs focus on cultivating what Myranda Marsha calls “the follow me” type of leaders who, by their own extraordinary efforts and qualities, use their individual expertise to influence, instruct or direct others. The SEAS Leadership Institute, by contrast, advances a different model of leadership. It aims to cultivate leaders who use their own passion for learning, integrity, authenticity, patience, courage, interpersonal skills and persistence to collaborate productively with and empower others to create innovative solutions to problems and positive change.
Leadership under this model is a profoundly difficult thing to do. It means that not only must a leader have extraordinary intellectual capacities, but she or he must be able to relate well to others and perhaps most importantly, cultivate and enact a set of values which are inclusive, empowering, relational and compelling.
Because of the ambitious nature of this form of leadership, the SEAS Leadership Institute will offer its students a rigorous, sustained and sequenced curriculum that spans their entire undergraduate experience and that is led not only by gifted Miami faculty but also by some of the most successful executives in the professional world of engineering and applied sciences. The journey that students will follow in the Institute will move them from viewing others as agents of change and knowledge to perceiving themselves as potential pioneers who can partner with diverse persons to effect transformational change in the professional world.
