Matthew Price – Pushing the limits of the architecture of computers
What is your hometown and your major / minor?
I’m from Medina, Ohio, and I’m double majoring in Computer Science and Economics, with a minor in Mathematics.
What intrigues you about your area of study?
I enjoy seeing just how far you can push the limits of a computer and how much you can do within the existing architecture of a computer.
Have you done any interesting research?
I’m currently researching sensor network security. We are trying to design a sensor network that provides event source unobservability while working within the constraints of a sensor’s limited energy, computation, and communication. As an interesting side note, the work I am doing with this research project will be used for a future class taught at Miami on sensor networks.
How have you spent your summers?
I spent summer 2008 in Washington, D.C. working for HealthCentral Network, Inc., which is a health website conglomerate. I was involved in web site design, web site load testing, and back-end programming. The past summer I worked as an intern in the advisory services for Ernst and Young in Cleveland, OH.
What are your interests out of the classroom?
I’m currently president of Chi Psi social fraternity, a member of Phi Sigma Pi honorary fraternity, on the Biz Quiz Team, and a member of the Miami University Rugby Football Club.
How do you use what you have learned in your classes in your co-curricular activities?
During the summers I have used a lot of what I have learned in my web site creation classes to start a web site design firm with one employee (me). I am now in the process of designing a Flex-based website for Chi Psi. For the rugby team I was involved with the creating our new rugby website along with a few others.
I am currently working on my sky diving license, have a scuba diving license, and love to mountain bike and long board in my spare time.
Why did you choose to come to Miami?
I looked at several universities before deciding to come to Miami. Schools I looked at and visited were MIT, Harvard, Cornell, Stanford, Case-Western, and Miami. In the end, I decided to only apply to Miami.
I choose Miami because when I came to visit, I was extremely impressed by the students and professors that I met. A lot of the professors talked about their classes and their students, which was unlike the other schools I had visited where the professors mostly talked about their research. This was very important to me as it showed how much Miami professors care about the undergraduate education and their students.
Almost all of the students I talked to while visiting told me how much they loved Miami and the education that they were receiving here. Many of the schools I looked at put a smaller emphasis of the quality of the undergraduate education experience and in the end that was the most deciding factor in my decision to attend Miami. Looking back on my decision, I fully believe that I made the correct decision. I am receiving a great undergraduate education and all of my professors show a genuine interest in not only my schoolwork but my life outside of school. It is for these reasons that I choose to attend Miami.

What are your future plans?
I plan on going to grad school at some point to get my PhD in both computer science and economics. I also want to later get my PhD in mathematics. Eventually, I hope to be a professor of computer science or economics and try to bring the two fields closer as there are a lot of things in each field that apply or can be utilized in the other field.
